This ancient summary of the work of Augustus is taken from the Res gestae divi Augusti, a report written by the emperor Augustus himself before his death concerning the works performed during his work.

Saepe gessi bella terra et mari, civilia externaque toto in orbe terrarum, victorque peperci civibus veniam petentibus. Exteras gentes, quibus tuto ignoscere potui, conservare quam excidere malui. Capitolium et Pompeium theatrum impensa grandi refeci sine ulla in scriptione nominis mei. Livos aquarum, compuribus locis vetustate labentes, refeci, et aquam, quae Marcia appellatur, duplicavi, fonte novo in rivum eius immisso. Perfeci forum Iulium et basilicam, quae fuit inter aedem Castoris et aedem Saturni, coepta profligataque opera a patre meo; eandem basilicam consumptam incendio, ampliato eius solo, sub nomine filiorum meorum incohavi.
I have often made wars by land and sea, civil and external all over the world, and I have spared the citizens who asked me for forgiveness.
